Roundy's Said Planning Urban Twin Cities Invasion

Roundy's Supermarkets Inc. is reportedly taking its Metro Market concept to Minneapolis, according to press reports. The Milwaukee-based retailer will open a 56,000-square-foot store as the first retail tenant to sign on with a 330,000-square-foot project under construction by Duke Realty Corp.

A project representative was quoted as saying that Roundy's was in final negotiations for the space -- which will likely be similar to its existing Metro Market format store it opened in downtown Milwaukee in 2004 - and is expected sign a lease soon.

Roundy's Metro Market store is an upscale, urban format that has filled a viable niche in the Milwaukee market.

In other news, Roundy's Foundation will embark on its fourth journey to deliver thousands of pounds of food to 51 food pantries in Wisconsin and Minnesota. For the first time, the retailer's foundation is inviting Pick 'n Save, Copps and Rainbow customers to participate by purchasing a Roundy's Foundation Truck Pin-Up for $1 or more at select stores. Their name will then be written on the truck and proudly displayed at their local store so that their neighbors can see that they support hunger relief in their community.

Roundy's Foundation Truck Pin-Ups went on sale beginning yesterday and will be offered through Friday, April 4 at participating stores in Eau Claire, Fitchburg, Glendale, Green Bay, Janesville, Kenosha, Madison, Manitowoc, McFarland, Milwaukee, Monroe, Oshkosh, Racine, Shorewood Hills, Two Rivers, West Milwaukee, Wis.; and Oakdale, St. Paul and Woodbury, Minn.

The spring Roundy's on the Road Food Tour will take place March 31 - April 4. At each stop, foundation and store officials will publicize the running total of customer donations. The final donation amount from the pin-up program will be announced the week of April 7 and will be divided equally in each market among the local food pantries listed on the tour schedule.
