Rouses Director of Center Store Passes Away

Marvin Young, Rouses Supermarkets’ director of center store, died of a heart attack on June 11 while attending a trade show.

Although Young only joined Thibodaux, La.-based Rouses in March, his grocery career dates back to 1972, when he began working for Bi-Lo, rising rapidly through the ranks there before moving on to executive roles at Bruno’s Supermarkets, Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. and Southern Family Markets. Before assuming his role at Rouses, Young was assistant VP of nonperishables for Birmingham, Ala.-based Belle Foods.

Marvin was on the Alabama Grocers Association (AGA) board for 14 years, held the role of association chairman in 2002, and served on every association committee, taking on such positions as convention committee chairman. In 2001, he received the AGA Retailer of the Year Award from his grocery industry peers.

A memorial service will be held Monday, June 24 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Hoover, Ala. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following charities: Alabama Grocers Education Foundation, 300 Vestavia Parkway, Suite 3500, Birmingham, AL 35216; and Spring Valley School, P.O. Box 131431, Birmingham, AL 35213.
