Safeway, Ahold Reach Pact with Union Workers in Baltimore-D.C.

Safeway Inc. and Ahold-operated Giant Foods early Sunday morning reached a tentative agreement with their over 25,000 grocery workers in the Baltimore-Washington area represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW).

Details of the contract will be available Wednesday, April 2, after workers vote on whether to ratify the agreement on Tuesday, April 1, said the UFCW.

The grocers involved in the tentative agreement had not released statements about the settlement yesterday.

The contract between the two chains and the union was to expire at midnight on Saturday, but the two sides had agreed to negotiate through Sunday.
