Safeway to Convert Truck Fleet to Biodiesel

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- In its latest sustainability initiative, Safeway, Inc. here is planning to convert its truck fleet to biodiesel.

Biodiesel is a domestic, renewable fuel for diesel engines and is derived from natural oils such as soybean oil, according to the National Biodiesel Board. It's considered one of many alternative fuel options with the potential to help reduce oil dependence and global-warming pollution.

Safeway will provide more details on the plan tomorrow morning during a press conference at the Safeway Capitol Hill in Washington, just before the Grocery Manufacturers Association's first-ever Sustainability Summit in Washington gets underway.

Attendees at the press conference will include Steve Neibergall, president, Eastern Division, Safeway; Joe Pettus, s.v.p., energy, Safeway; Tom Nartker, v.p., transportation; Cal Dooley, president, Grocery Manufacturers Association; Kevin Havelock, president, Unilever Americas; Bob Myers, asst. administrator for air and radiation, EPA; and U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.).

During the event, Unilever's Havelock will highlight the reduced packaging used in the company's Suave line of health and beauty products.

Last year Safeway won the California Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) for promoting green business practices and implementing significant environmental initiatives throughout its operations.
