Safeway Hires CPG Exec as SVP of Consumer Brands

Safeway, Inc. has hired Joseph Ennen as SVP of consumer brands, in which capacity he will oversee the company’s corporate brands organization, including its marketing, finance and outside sales functions.

“Joe’s extensive CPG experience and track record as a marketer and innovator make him uniquely suited to lead Safeway’s consumer brands business,” said Mike Minasi, Safeway’s president of marketing.

Ennen comes to Safeway after four years at the Frito-Lay division of Purchase, N.Y.-based PepsiCo, first as VP, core brands where he managed the Doritos, Tostitos, and Cheetos lines, and most recently group VP, innovation. In that role, he was responsible for leading the entire innovation development cycle for Plano, Texas-based Frito-Lay North America, from identifying strategic opportunities to product launch.

Earlier, he worked at the Kellogg Co. in Battle Creek, Mich., where, over seven years, he held various senior marketing positions in the United States and the United Kingdom. In 1999, he took a position with Omaha, Neb.-based ConAgra Foods as VP/GM for Healthy Choice, the company’s largest brand. He spent his early career in finance at General Mills.

Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway operates 1,739 stores in the United States and Canada and had annual sales of $44.1 billion in 2008.
