Safeway Sets Dominick’s Deadline for Dec. 28

All unsold stores will be closed

Safeway Inc. plans to close all unsold Dominick's grocery stores by Dec. 28, according to a company memo obtained by Crain’s Chicago Business.

In the memo to employees, Dominick's director of human resources Dewayne Howard writes that “all employees at those locations will be separated on or about December 28,” and that the company expects all closures to be permanent.

Safeway announced last month that it would exit Chicago by 2014.

To date, four of the 72 Dominick's stores in Illinois have been sold to Cerberus-backed New Albertsons Inc. According to published reports, New Albertsons may buy some additional stores, and other retailers may as well, including Roundy’s, Kroger and a few local independents.
