The Smithfield-sponsored promotion is part of the protein provider’s ongoing relationship with Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway. In 2011, Virginia-based Smithfield and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) donated 125,000 pounds of protein, or 500,000 servings, to food banks in Reno, Nev.; Denver; Portland, Ore.; and Seattle, at Safeway’s request. “Feeding the Hungry” is a joint program of the UFCW and Smithfield to donate and help deliver 20 million servings of protein over three years to food banks around the United States
Smithfield has also teamed with other grocery retailers across the country to donate more than 13 million servings of protein to Feeding America food banks and other nonprofit organizations.
