Schnucks to Build Greenhouse

St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets Inc. has partnered with BrightFarms Inc. to build a new greenhouse that can deliver local produce year round, starting sometime next year.

The $2 million 43,500-square-foot facility will be financed by New York-based BrightFarms, a company that builds and operates greenhouse farms, according to the St. Louis Business Journal. While a site for the greenhouse has yet to be selected, it is expected to be located near Schnucks’ network of stores in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa. A local farmer will operate the greenhouse and deliver produce to the grocer.

The 1-acre greenhouse is expected to grow up to 500,000 pounds of local lettuce and tomatoes annually.
