Schnucks Offering Reusable Grocery Bags

ST. LOUIS - Schnuck Markets, Inc. here is encouraging customers to choose to reuse by offering reusable grocery bags with handles that not only ease their grocery loads but also the burden on the environment.

Schnucks has entered a partnership with Commerce, Calif.-based Earthwise Bag Co., Inc. to offer the brown "earth bags" for sale at the advertised price of 10 for $10.

"The bags are a combination of functionality and aesthetics, giving consumers a sturdy, bag at a very affordable price," said Schnucks category manager Joe Duggan.

The reusable bags hold more than traditional plastic bags and will stand up to multiple shopping trips, said Duggan, noting: "Many of our customers have told us they want a third option when checking out in addition to the usual 'paper or plastic.' While we encourage our shoppers to use the new alternative, the traditional choices still will be available at no additional cost."

Schnucks had offered reusable canvas bags for several years, but this new version is washable and easier to produce at a price that Duggan says should help increase usage. The bags measure 13.5" high x 12.5" wide x 8.5" deep and include a thin plastic base to stabilize the bags while packing. The bags are made of 100 percent non-woven polypropylene, which is lightweight and durable, recyclable and reusable, resistant to corrosion, hypoallergenic and non-toxic.

Schnucks operates 102 stores (including five Logli stores) and 99 pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee and Mississippi.
