Shaw's Closing Two Rhode Island Stores

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass -- Shaw's Supermarkets said Friday that it would close two anchor stores in Rhode Island shopping centers in Pawtucket and Providence, R.I. on Sept. 1.

"The company regularly reviews its store portfolio, and after a careful and thorough analysis, Shaw's concluded that [these stores were] not meeting its goals," Haley Meyer, a spokeswoman for Supervalu, the parent company of Shaw's told Progressive Grocer

One hundred and three associates work at the Pawtucket store, and 121 work at the Providence location, noted Meyer, adding that the banner would work with the appropriate UFCW locals "to address the individual situations of associates consistent with collective bargaining agreement's seniority provisions."
