Shaw's, New Hampshire Go Fish

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- In an effort to inform women of childbearing years about the importance of eating fish and mercury awareness, Shaw's Supermarkets here and New Hampshire's Department of Environmental Services (DES) have teamed up to tout fish as part of a balanced diet.

Shaw's fish counters across the state will feature a new poster outlining the benefits of eating fish and warning which types of fish have the highest mercury levels.

DES encourages the public to "eat healthy fish" in moderation instead avoiding the food altogether. Fish contain high levels of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, a crucial nutrient for brain development.

"This effort shows its commitment to helping its customers make healthy choices," said DES commissioner Thomas Burack in a statement. "Shaw's is the first major grocery retailer in the state to display these posters."

The promotion came about as a result of consumer confusion over whether fish is actually safe for pregnant women or young children to eat.
