WEST BRIDGEWATER. Mass. -- Shaw's Supermarkets here has joined forces with RecycleBank, a Philadelphia-based rewards program that motivates people to recycle, which is now expanding its service area to include municipalities throughout New England.

RecycleBank, which plans an eventual rollout across the United States, will launch service to addition households in upstate New York and Vermont in the next few months. The New England communities currently taking part in the program are Southbridge, Sturbridge, Charlton, Webster, Dudley, and Leicester, Mass.

RecycleBank encourages households and communities to recycle by financially rewarding each household for the amount they've recycled. The program's proprietary technology measures the amount of material recycled, and then converts the amount into RecycleBank Points that can be used at hundreds of local and national RecycleBank Reward Partners.

Supervalu banner Shaw's was one of the first regional retailers to sign on as a reward partner. "Shaw's is a leader in the supermarket industry when it comes to innovative environmental programs for energy conservation, recycling, and other green efforts," noted president Larry Wahlstrom in a statement. "By partnering with RecycleBank, we are taking it one step further by rewarding our customers for recycling and helping preserve the environment."

The program's roster of partners currently includes over 300 local and national retailers, among them Coca-Cola, Dunkin' Donuts, and Dick's Sporting Goods.

Shaw's, Osco, and Star Market are a division of Minneapolis-based Supervalu. Shaw's operates over 200 store locations employing about 29,000 associates throughout New England. Supervalu runs 2,500 retail grocery locations, and also supplies distribution and related logistics support services to over 5,000 grocery retail endpoints across the United States. The company has about 200,000 employees.
