ShopRite, UConn Tackle Hunger

ShopRite and The University of Connecticut in East Hartford have teamed up to help the hungry this holiday season with a canned food drive before the Dec. 1 UConn versus Cincinnati football game. During pre-game tailgate hours, attendees can bring canned food items to collection bins at each entrance to Rentschler Field, as well as to the ShopRite tent at Fanfest between gates A and B.

The food donations will be accepted from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Donating fans will be entered into a drawing to receive two season tickets to all remaining UConn Women’s Basketball games, starting Dec. 3 when the Huskies square off against Maryland. The winner will be revealed during the second half of the Dec. 1 game.

All donated food items from the Dec. 1 game will go to Oxnard, Calif.-based nonprofit organization Foodshare and distributed to the needy in the greater Hartford, Conn., area.

ShopRite, the banner under which the members of the Keasbey, N.J.-based retail cooperative Wakefern Food Corp. operate stores, is involved in hunger relief through ShopRite Partners In Caring, a year-round, community-based hunger-fighting initiative that works with more than 50 food industry manufacturers to provide almost $3 million annually to qualified charitable agencies in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Since it began in 1999, ShopRite Partners In Caring has donated $29 million to 1,700-plus charities.
