Smith's Food and Drug Launches Recall after Report of Metal in Ground Beef
SALT LAKE CITY -- Smith's Food and Drug here launched a recall of fresh ground beef made for it by Utah processor Stone Meats, Inc., after a customer who bought the ground beef at a Smith’s store said his daughter cut her hand on a metal shard found in the meat while she was forming hamburger patties.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Friday Stone Meats and the retailer recalled approximately 11,250 pounds of fresh ground beef products in 5-pound chubs that may contain pieces of metal.
The products were produced on September 5, and were distributed to Smith’s stores under the Smith's name brand with a sell-by date of Sept.19. in Utah and Mesquite, Nev. The products should no longer be available in grocery stores, USDA said Friday, but consumers could still have them in their refrigerators and freezers.
