STELLARTON, N.S. -- Sobeys, Inc. here will implement Safefreight Technology's trailer temperature monitoring and GPS fleet management solution. The Edmonton, Alberta-based's company's Smartfleet technology will be deployed to 90 trailers in the Sobeys fleet, which delivers temperature-sensitive food items to 189 retail store locations and three distribution centers in western Canada.

The grocer will now have the ability to track vehicles by location, audit inventory movement between distribution centers and store locations, and monitor up to three temperature zones within its refrigerated transport trailers.

"Sobeys' key business objective was to bring the freshest and safest possible product to their customers. Our GPS trailer tracking and monitoring solution helps them ensure that deliveries are on time and that temperature sensitive perishables are transported at optimum temperatures," said Safefrieght c.e.o. Curtis Serna in a statement.

Safefreight spokeswoman Shauna Peeks told Progressive Grocer that the technology was being customized and would be implemented in Sobeys trucks by the end of this year.

As well as temperature monitoring, Sobeys will also be able to keep track of the open/closed status of trailer doors to determine if temperature-sensitive food shipments have been exposed to any potentially unsafe conditions during transportation.

Additionally, the SmartFleet diagnostic interface provides the retailer with online fleet reports that summarize important asset-specific information such as summaries for working hours and idling time, trip details, a stop/go activity report, and vehicle history. These features will aid Sobeys in maximizing the productivity of its fleet assets.

The value of the companies' three-year contract is about CAN $290,000 (US $296,000).

Owned by Empire Co., Ltd., Sobeys owns or franchises over 1,300 stores in all 10 Canadian provinces under retail banners including Sobeys, IGA extra, IGA, Foodland, and Price Chopper.

Safefreight Technology is a developer of safety and security-enhanced fleet management solutions, including those related to refrigerated trailers.
