Pomegranate, the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based upscale kosher supermarket profiled by Progressive Grocer as a Store of the Month in its September 2009 issue, will sponsor a four-part in-store cooking demonstration this month and the next featuring celebrity chef Susie Fishbein. The focus on fish in the upcoming series reflects a growing health consciousness among kosher consumers, according to Pomegranate general manager Gabe Boxer.
“While customers are becoming more and more aware of the many health benefits of eating fish, they aren't necessarily familiar with the many different and delicious ways fish can be prepared, he notes
Fishbein, author of the successful Kosher by Design series, concurs. “Fish is one of the quickest and healthiest dinners to get on the table, yet it is underutilized,” she observes. I am excited to help educate consumers about fish other than gefilte -- and turn them on to great meal ideas for feeding their families.”
Helping shoppers prepare their own versions of Fishbein’s dishes is Pomegranate's fish department, which boasts an impressive assortment of fresh varieties.
“We're not just talking salmon and flounder here,” said Boxer. “We’re talking about the kind of fish homemakers are not accustomed to seeing in the typical kosher fish store -- fish like bronzini, barramundi, sardines and mahi-mahi. There are exciting new options out there -- the next step is just to provide shoppers with the knowledge they need to put perfect fish dishes on their tables.”
The demos are scheduled to take place on Monday, Feb. 14; Monday, Feb. 28; Tuesday, March 1: and Monday, March 14. Each session starts at 11:30 a.m.
