Southern Family Markets to Reopen Remodeled Stores

Following major store remodels, a Bruno’s in Spanish Fort, Ala., and a Food World in Saraland, Ala., will celebrate their grand reopenings with ribbon-cutting ceremonies on Nov. 17 at 9 a.m. The renovations are part of Southern Family Markets’ continuing strategy of reinvesting in its banners.

“We are extremely committed to this ongoing effort of evaluating our existing stores and continually looking for ways to improve the customer experience,” noted Max Henderson, president of Birmingham, Ala.-based Southern Family Markets. “There is a sense of taking pride in a store when it is remodeled in a significant way, and we want our customers and employees to know that the quality of our stores truly matter to us.”

Many of the Southeast regional grocer’s stores have already undergone extensive remodels under the plan. These two latest renovations bring the total number of stores that have been overhauled this year to 14, with nine of them converted from the Southern Family Markets banner to Food World, and one from Southern Family Markets to Bruno’s, in the process. According to the company, plans are already in place for additional store remodels throughout 2011.

As well as renovated existing space, new equipment, and improved exteriors and interiors, the refurbished stores now feature hot wings bars and an expanded product variety, including Swiss Pastries, an exclusive delicacy at Bruno’s.

Events taking place occurring during what the grocer has designated “grand reopening month” include a drawing for an Ultimate SEC Tailgate Party Package valued at more than $200, a giveaway for a year of free Mayfield Ice Cream, a Super Snack Sack giveaway (100 bags of free, already packed groceries at each store), the Community Coffee Trolley (Dec. 3, 8 a.m.-1p.m.), cooking demos with Conecuh Smoked Sausage, Sanderson Farms Chicken, Prairie Fresh Prime Pork Tenderloins and other items (Dec. 3 and Dec. 4, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.), and an ice cream sundae-building contest (Dec. 4, noon).

A subsidiary of Keene, N.H.-based C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southern Family Markets operates more than 60 grocery stores in the southeastern United States under the Southern Family Market, Piggly Wiggly, Food World and Bruno's banners.
