Two more grocery retailers are kicking off the new year with ambitious programs that offer customers discounted gasoline.
Two Spartan Stores banners -- Family Fare and D&W Fresh Markets -- are offering a special $0.99-per-gallon gasoline promotion for up to 20 gallons at select supermarkets in their Grand Rapids and Holland, Mich., markets as part of the company's ongoing retail strategy to enhance its consumer value offerings.
Supervalu's Milford, Ohio-based bigg's subsidiary is also angling to help Cincinnati-area customers earn fuel discounts via a partnership with Sunoco.
Dubbed "Pump Perks," bigg's new fuel-incentive program offers gas discounts based on varying purchase amounts at 14 Sunoco gas stations.
"Pump Perks goes above and beyond other gas discount programs because there is no limit to how much customers can save -- there's nothing like it in the area," said Jimmy Nichols, bigg's VP of merchandising and marketing. "With aggressive Pump Perks discounts on thousands of everyday items in our stores," Nichols said, bigg's customers can earn deep discounts on fuel to the tune of $1 to $2 discounts or more per gallon.
Pump Perks allows customers to save in two ways, said Nichols. In one iteration, bigg's shoppers can purchase thousands of specially marked products throughout the store tagged with the Pump Perks logo and receive the per-gallon savings shown on the shelf tag. For example, a one-cent Pump Perks discount on 20 gallons has a value of up to 20 cents, a three-cent Pump Perks discount has a value of up to 60 cents, and so on. The second way customers save is by earning Pump Perks fuel discounts based on the total price of their bigg's purchase, for which customers can earn one cent discount per gallon for every $10 spent.
Pump Perks is one of the largest customer savings initiatives in the history of bigg's, noted Nichols. "We understand that consumers are working hard to stretch their dollars. Now more than ever, it's important for us to continue to add value and find ways for our customers to save."
Meanwhile, shoppers seeking to cash in on discounted gasoline at 30 of Spartan Stores' D&W Fresh Market and Family Fare supermarkets are required to purchase $100 worth of store merchandise in a single visit in order to qualify for the special gasoline price promotion. Coupons for the special promotion will be issued at the supermarkets and can be redeemed at any one of the company's 11 participating Quick Stop fuel centers. The two-day promotion ran from Sunday through today, Tuesday, Jan. 6.
