Spartan Banners 'Scan-Away' Hunger for the Holidays

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Spartan Stores here is working with food pantries throughout northern Michigan to scan-away hunger this holiday season, through its D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare, Felpausch, and Glen's Markets banners.

Beginning this Sun., Nov. 11 and running through Dec. 15, 2007 at all the banners' locations, each time customers shop any location and add a "Scan-Away Hunger" tag to their grocery bill for $1.99, they'll help feed a hungry and homeless person in West, Southwestern and Northern Michigan.

Funds collected will go directly to the food pantries of the store's choice.

The program provides an ideal "opportunity for people from a wide range of backgrounds to come together on one day to make such a positive impact on the fight against hunger in our community," said Jeanne Norcross, Spartan Stores' v.p./corporate affairs.

In 2006 the program raised over $50,000.

With warehouse facilities in Grand Rapids and Plymouth, Mich., Spartan distributes more than 40,000 private-label and national brand products to nearly 400 independent grocery stores in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. The company also owns and operates 88 retail supermarkets and 14 deep-discount food and drug stores in Michigan and Ohio.
