GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Spartan Stores Inc. here intends to rebrand its recently acquired Felpausch Food Centers, after it completes an aggressive remodeling schedule and a retooling of the merchandise mix.
During a conference call to review its fiscal 2008 first quarter results, Craig Sturken, Spartan’s chief executive, told analysts the company will spend the next four quarters upgrading the 20 Felpausch stores. Spartan completed the $38.5 million Felpausch deal in June, bringing to 88 the number of Spartan-owned and operated supermarkets.
Spartan will invest between $500,000 to $1 million to upgrade the stores, said Sturken, noting that a name conversion to either its D&W Fresh Market or Family Fare banner will be based on what is appropriate for each location.
Sturken also said that additional sales increases are expected on the wholesale distribution side from expanded business with Indiana-based Martin's Super Markets and with existing Spartan wholesale customers who have purchased 14 former Farmer Jack supermarkets in Southeast Michigan.
