Stater Bros. to Open 2.1 Million sq. ft. Facility

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Regional independent Stater Bros. this afternoon will open its new corporate offices and distribution center on a new 200-acre campus that was formerly Norton Air Force Base.

Stater Bros. claimed that at 2.1 million square feet, the DC is the largest under-one-roof facility in the supermarket industry. When the DC begins shipping product in February 2008, it will replace eight existing DCs currently located in Colton, Redlands, and Mira Loma. It will consist of a dry distribution facility, refrigerated facility, bakery depot, truck maintenance garage, and dispatch returns building, and will employ 2,000 associates.

Together, the corporate offices, DC, and support facilities total 2,295,000 square feet, and the campus has an additional 300,000 square feet set aside for future expansion.

During the construction phase, Stater Bros. recycled reusable materials from the 35 World War II era buildings and warehouses that were removed from the site.

In addition to the recycling efforts during the demolition process, energy saving technology was incorporated into the design of campus. The dry DC has approximately 1,000 skylights, and the entire Stater Bros. Campus includes a lighting control system that will reduce energy consumption by 40 percent, and a window glazing treatment that will reduce energy consumption by 30 percent, according to the retailer. Stater Bros. also planted over 1,200 traditional Southern California trees and plants, including California Oak trees, Palm trees, Navel Orange trees, and Cactus.

Stater Bros. operates 164 Supermarkets, and employs more than 18,000 associates.
