Stew Leonard's Store to Hold Children's Cooking Classes, Adult Cooking Demos

NORWALK, Conn. -- The newest Stew Leonard's store, located in Newington, Conn., will be the site of both children's cooking classes and adult cooking demonstrations at its fully equipped demonstration kitchen on the store's second level.

"Some of the major barriers to getting more people cooking in the kitchen is lack of time and their real or perceived lack of knowledge -- whether it's how to plan a meal and shop for groceries, or even learning basic cooking skills and terminology," said Chaz Fable, executive chef at Stew Leonard’s Newington store, in a statement. "The goal of the adult cooking classes is to give people confidence in the kitchen to be able to prepare a great meal quickly and easily, and to have fun doing it. With the children, it is all about teaching them safety and cleanliness, but also about getting them excited about cooking and eating healthfully."

Stew Leonard's Children's Cooking Classes are for children aged eight through 12, the company said. Classes are limited to 10 children at a time. All children receive a chef's hat, a chef's medallion at graduation, and recipe cards, as well as get to taste and take home the food that they make.

The adult cooking demonstrations will be taught by Fable and chef Sean Telesha and will cover presentation and plating skills, knife skills, tools of the trade, and shopping for ingredients. Class participants will be asked to help demonstrate, and every participant will be able to taste the dishes, and receive recipes and a shopping list. Registration is free, and classes are limited to 20 people.

Stew Leonard's other stores are located in Norwalk and Danbury, Conn. and Yonkers, N.Y., with additional locations slated for Orange, Conn. and East Farmingdale, N.Y.
