Stop & Shop, Breyers Join Forces Against Childhood Hunger

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. and Breyers Ice Cream have formed a partnership to raise $100,000 for Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest -- the Nation’s Food Bank Network) and its local member food banks through several initiatives to take place throughout September, which has been designated Hunger Action Month. Over 9 million children are estimated to be served by Chicago-based Feeding America, representing nearly 13 percent of all children under the age 18 in the United States.

“Through these community events and programs in our stores, we’re not only raising much needed money for the cause, but also educating consumers about the seriousness of childhood hunger,” noted Faith Weiner, director of public affairs at Quincy, Mass.-based Stop & Shop, a division of Ahold USA. “We are making it easy for our customers to give back in ways they may not have been able to do otherwise.”

The three ways Stop & Shop customers can contribute to the cause are as follows:

--Buying specially marked “Fight Childhood Hunger” Breyers All Natural Vanilla Ice Cream packaging, to help support Feeding America Programs that provide food to children and their families in local communities. Twenty-five percent of the total donation will go to Feeding America for national efforts, and the rest will be distributed to area food banks

--Rooting for the home team, since a partnership with the Red Sox Radio Network, the Mets Radio Network and the Orioles Radio Network enables Breyers to donate $100 to Feeding America and local member food banks for every “strike-out” pitch

--Joining Breyers and Stop & Shop for a Sept. 26 Popsicle Party. All of the proceeds from the $1 Popsicles will be donated to local food banks through Stop & Shop’s Family Foundation, which was created to support educational and recreational programs for children in the communities served by the banner. This event and other in-store promotions will raise an estimated additional $20,000 toward hunger relief, according to Stop & Shop

The Family Foundation has raised over $5 million for children's programs and charities since it began in 2003.

Stop & Shop employs more than 59,000 associates and operates stores throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, New York and New Jersey.
