Stop & Shop Helps N.Y.-area Russian Jews Eat Healthy at Passover

Russian-speaking Passover celebrants in the New York metro area will be able to enjoy a healthier holiday with a new recipe guide provided in their native language by the Stop & Shop Supermarket Co.

“We know that eating healthy is important to our shoppers even during this festive holiday,” noted Faith Weiner, director of community affairs at Quincy, Mass.-based Stop & Shop, a division of Ahold USA. “As a result, Stop & Shop has issued nutrition guidelines in Russian to media serving the Russian Jewish community, providing suggestions on how to enjoy traditional Passover recipes while making sure that health concerns are not ignored during this eight-day celebration.”

Added Weiner, “In creating these guidelines, we found ways to suggest that loved ones can have healthy options at the seder meal without sacrificing the traditional flavors they’ve come to expect by making small adjustments to the way food is prepared in the family kitchen.”

Russian speakers are important to Stop & Shop’s extensive Passover business. Demographic data demonstrates that since 1989, the New York Association of New Americans (NYANA) has resettled nearly 250,000 refugees from the former Soviet Union, and many still depend on their first language.

In working on the guide, which is also widely available in English, Stop & Shop consumer advisor Andrea Astrachan honored the spirit of traditional Passover recipes while lowering salt and calories wherever possible.
