Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover Streamline Assortment as Part of VIP Treatment

The stop & Shop Supermarket Co. and Giant Food, LLC have discontinued many low-selling items as part of its Value Improvement Program. The goal of the SKU cuts is to free up supermarket shelves for higher quantities of fewer products, thereby saving money for the grocer and its consumers alike, the Ahold USA banners said.

"It takes some costs related to the supply chain out of the business, and we can order larger quantities of our more popular items," Ahold USA spokesman Jamie Miller told the Associated Press. "By simplifying the inventory, it reduces the operating costs, and we can pass that on to our customers."

Miller pointed out that the stores still offer over 50,000 items, among them newly added books and DVDs to make the operators more of a "one-stop shop."

Giant and sister banner Stop & Shop rolled out VIP in the fall of 2006.
