Store Brands in Nationwide Recall of French-Style Green Beans

MANITOWOC, Wis. -- Lakeside Foods, Inc. based here initiated a voluntary recall of 15,000 cases of 14.5-ounce French Style Green Beans-including store brand labels for Kroger, Schnuck Markets, Supervalu-Albertson's, HEB and other grocers-because some of the products might have been under-processed and some cans may have leaked, and thus raise a risk of botulism.

Lakeside Foods said it launched the recall after learning of a potential problem during routine internal monitoring. While no illnesses have been reported, the company said, the cans have the potential to be contaminated with harmful organisms including Clostridium botulinum. No botulinum toxin has been found in any cans tested to date, but the company said it continues to test the recalled products.

The product was sold with the following labels: Albertson's, Happy Harvest, Best Choice, Food Club, Bogopa, Valu Time, Hill Country Fare, H-E-B, Laura Lynn, Kroger, No Name, North Pride, Shop N Save, Schnuck's, Shoppers Valu, Cub Foods, Dierbergs, Flavorite, IGA, Best Choice and Thrifty Maid.

It was distributed in 20 states: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin; and also in Canada.

Lakeside said it is working closely with the Food & Drug Administration, and has identified and corrected the condition that prompted the recall.
