    Subway Opens Units in Five More Supermarkets

    MILFORD, Conn. -- The Subway restaurant chain, based here, opened units in five more supermarkets between the beginning of March and the end of June, the company said yesterday.

    MILFORD, Conn. -- The Subway restaurant chain, based here, opened units in five more supermarkets between the beginning of March and the end of June, the company said yesterday.

    The stores are Bajan's Meat Market in Nazareth, Pa.; Crossroad IGA, in Bowling Green, Ky.; IGA Grocery Store in Pemberville, Ohio; Lowe's Grocery Store in Gallup, N.M.; and Neighborhood Market in Lincoln, Neb.

    During the same time period, Subway also opened units within convenience stores located in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia, as well as in Australia, Canada, England, Germany, India, New Zealand, and Northern Ireland

    Additionally, the chain has opened stores-within-stores in three BJ's Wholesale Clubs, one each in Connecticut, Florida, and Pennsylvania, and in 48 Wal-Marts across the United States.

    At the present time Subway has 27,887 locations in 87 countries. Out of that number, 87 are in grocery stores; 3,477 are in convenience stores, including truck stops and highway rest areas; 1,402 are in Wal-Mart store, and 20 in BJ's Wholesale Clubs, Subway spokesman Les Winograd told Progressive Grocer.

    In the March-through-June time frame, Subway opened a total of 628 new locations. As well as in grocery and convenience stores, the chain now has nontraditional locations in places such as airports, college campuses, convenience stores, grocery stores, hospitals and many other places in which space is at a premium. The number of such nontraditional locations is over 6,400, according to the company.
