Sunflower Earns Hot Retailers Award

Natural and organic grocer Sunflower Farmers Market has won the 2010 Hot Retailers Award from the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). The award has been given out annually for the past eight years. Sunflower was one of over 3,000 companies eligible for the honor.

Winners were chosen based on the results of a yearly survey sent to over 55,000 ICSC members, who were asked to identify the concepts they considered to be the “most original and innovative” in the industry. The other award recipients were Charming Charlie, a Houston-based fashion accessories chain; Edible Arrangements, a Connecticut-based food delivery service; Flip Flop Shops, an Atlanta footwear concept; and Too Hotties, a haircutting chain aimed at men.

Bennett Bertoli, Sunflower’s VP of real estate, accepted the award on behalf of the grocer at a May 25 ceremony held during RECon, the largest retail real estate event in the world, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. TV entertainer Carson Kressley, of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” fame, was the host.

“This award is a true tribute to our grocery store concept, which we believe has brought the best of both worlds together — low price points and natural, organic foods,” noted said Mike Gilliland, CEO of Sunflower Farmers Market.

Sunflower operates 29 stores throughout Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Texas.
