Superior Grocers Joins L.A. County for Wellness Push

Superior Grocers, one of the largest independent supermarket chains in Southern California, is partnering with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services to promote healthy living and connect the community with CalFresh and nutrition education resources and programs by sponsoring the CalFresh Awareness Month Kick Off Event.

Set for April 29, 2013, the event will enlist the support of its partners to help spread the word about healthy eating, nutrition guidelines and access to resources that help bring nutritious food to many families. This special event will include free health screenings, healthy food demonstrations, and product and prize giveaways to attendees.

Aside from Superior Grocers, other partners participating in the health awareness initiative include LA County, Department of Public Social Services; LA County, Department of Public Health; Network for a Healthy California; AltaMed; St. Francis Medical Center; Daughters of Charity; Women, Infants and Children (WIC); and many local entities and healthy food vendors.

“Our commitment to healthy living has brought all these partners together to help bring health awareness to our communities,” said Mimi Song, chairman/CEO of Lynwood, Calif.-based Superior Grocers. “I am very excited to continue these healthy living efforts with our partners throughout our stores and Southern California communities.”

This kick-off event will jumpstart the CalFresh Awareness month activities that begin on May 1, which will emphasize the importance of good nutrition and health by providing the public with tips and demonstrations for healthy cooking and ideas for incorporating physical activities throughout the day.

As a further commitment to the local community, Superior Grocers will also present a $25,000 grant to Alliance College-Ready Public Schools and recognize their achievements in education excellence in local Southern California neighborhoods.

Other events are planned throughout the month of May at various Superior Grocers locations.
