Supervalu Pharmacies Offer Screenings to Detect Pre-Diabetes

FRANKLIN PARK, Ill. - In time for the upcoming, food-centric holiday season, some Supervalu Pharmacies here will provide blood glucose screenings for customers that can detect pre-diabetes and diabetes.

Specially trained Supervalu pharmacists at select locations will offer glucose screenings, by appointment, during regular in-store pharmacy hours, in Supervalu banner stores in California, Illinois, Missouri, Virginia, Connecticut, Indiana, Montana, Washington, Idaho, Minnesota and Utah.

"In many cases, diabetes can be delayed or even prevented with early detection and by making appropriate changes in diet and physical activity," said Nancy Lyons, manager of Supervalu's Diabetes Care Program.

"Our highly trained pharmacists offer blood glucose screenings year round. However, as the holiday season approaches, we encourage potentially at-risk adults to get the information they need to make wise and healthy choices before they notice symptoms," she added.

The screening test measures glucose levels by taking a few drops of blood from a finger. Results are calculated and provided at the time of the test. In addition, Supervalu pharmacists can counsel patients on recommended steps based on test outcomes.

"By offering health screenings and quality education at our in-store pharmacies, we believe we can help customers manage their health and have a better quality of life," said Bill Baker, registered pharmacist and manager/clinical programs marketing.
