Sweetbay's Smith Promoted to SVP Merchandising

TAMPA, Fla. -- Regional chain Sweetbay Supermarket, a division of the Delhaize Group, said yesterday that it had promoted key exec Steve Smith to s.v.p. of merchandising.

IN his previous held post of v.p. of merchandising, Smith drove a number of key business initiatives, including reinvigorating a team dedicated to a passionate focus on the food sold in Sweetbay stores. Prior to his role in the merchandising department, Smith was v.p. of marketing.

"Steve was instrumental in building and implementing the brand that hundreds of thousands of consumers today know as Sweetbay," said Shelley Broader, president and c.e.o. of Sweetbay, in a statement. "His extraordinary capacity for learning has allowed him to play a pivotal role in our transformation, and his true commitment for doing what's right for the future of our company is core to his work."

Smith joined Sweetbay in October of 2003. He was instrumental in the creation of the Sweetbay brand, and the execution of integrated customer-focused marketing programs, as well as brand management.

Prior to joining Sweetbay, Smith was director of marketing and brand management at Hannaford Bros a sister chain under the Delhaize umbrella. Smith has a mix of sales, marketing, brand stewardship, and general business management skills from his prior experiences in the corporate and advertising worlds.
