Mango Recall Hits 1M
The recalled mangoes (left) bear a sticker with one of the following PLU numbers: 3114, 4051, 4311, 4584 or 4959. The fruit, which was cultivated and harvested in Mexico, was sold between July 12 and Aug. 29 at such retailers as Costco, Save Mart, Food 4 Less, Kroger, Giant Eagle, Stop & Shop, Aldi and some Whole Foods stores, according to Splendid Products. According to company spokesman Ernest DelBuono, who was cited on a CNN blog, about 100,000 boxes of eight to 10 mangoes each were shipped to retailers and wholesalers across the country. Mangoes have been linked to recent cases of salmonellosis in Canada and are possibly the culprits in the outbreaks of illness reported in California and other states, the distributor acknowledged. “We want to let everyone know our top priority is public safety,” noted Larry Nienkerk, Splendid Products' general manager. “We have notified all of our customers and we are working with all the government agencies that are involved. We didn’t want to wait.” The FDA has advised consumers who bought mangoes involved in the recall to throw them away.
