Tops Helps Meals On Wheels

Tops Friendly Markets yesterday presented $5,000 in fuel gift cards to Meals on Wheels for Western New York to help the organization and its volunteers pay for gas.

After the presentation, which took place at store in Buffalo, N.Y., many of the regional grocer's management and associates volunteered their time to assist with midday meal deliveries to the elderly and disabled in the Buffalo area.

"We realize that there are many organizations that are dependant on transporting residents, clients, and, in this case, hot meals to people in need of assistance," said Tops president and c.e.o. Frank Curci. "We are very happy to help in any way we can."

Meals on Wheels volunteers use 200 vehicles and travel 1,000 miles to deliver meals in the Buffalo area daily, and deliver almost 840,000 meals annually. Record fuel costs have led to fewer volunteers in recent days, however.

Besides yesterday's deliveries, Tops has urged its employees to volunteer for the organization on a regular basis.

"Our...associates are committed to volunteering in their communities throughout the year, both through Tops and in their personal lives as well," noted Curci. "They're looking forward to helping today, and hopefully will consider Meals on Wheels as a volunteer opportunity in the future."
