Tops Markets Names Execs to 'Leadership Assignments

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. -- Tops Markets here has named six company officials to what it calls "leadership assignments," which Tops spokeswoman Katie McKenna explained to Progressive Grocer were, for the most part, "a title change with added responsibilities."

The officials will head up initiatives in the retailer's operations stemming from its December 2007 acquisition by Morgan Stanley Private Equity.

The executives are s.v.p. of operations John Persons, s.v.p of human resources Jack Barrett, v.p. of information technology Mike Metz, v.p. of sales development Mike Verostko, v.p. of real estate and construction Tom Fitzgerald, and controller Dave Prisaznuk.

"This team of professionals will play a critical role in the evolution of our business," said Tops c.e.o. Frank Curci in a statement. "This experienced group of leaders along with all of our associates will contribute to our efforts in reestablishing Tops Markets as a premier local grocer and the supermarket of choice in the regions we serve."

Curci added that the aim of the initiatives is to improve the customer experience.

Persons has been with the company for over 20 years. He provides oversight for all aspects of operations at Tops, with a focus on development of associates, sales development, budgeting, and strategic objectives relevant to the grocer's operations.

Barrett has been with Tops for 39 years. He oversees all human resource functions and serves as Tops' lead representative in all labor relations matters, including collective bargaining.

Metz has over 20 years of experience at the retailer. In his new role he is responsible for IT systems and support functions for Tops' corporate office and stores.

Formerly director of sales development, Verostko has been with Tops for over 30 years. He handles the development of ad programs, public relations, community relations, food safety, customer relationship, fuel marketing, and customer research.

Fitzgerald has been with the grocer since 1991 and has over 25 years experience in retail property management. He's responsible for all aspects of operations in land acquisition, property lease management, physical improvements, legal, maintenance, and purchasing.

A 20-year Tops veteran, Prisaznuk's new role requires him to oversee all financial activities, including control of corporate assets. Additionally, he's responsible for risk management, treasury functions, financial reporting, and payroll administration.

With over 10,000 associates, Tops operates 71 full-service supermarkets and five franchise supermarkets.
