    Tops Streamlines Benefits Enrollment, Communication

    Grocer has adopted Benefitfocus solution

    Tops Markets LLC has implemented the Benefitfocus platform and HR InTouch secure online portal to improve communication and the online enrollment process for the grocer’s employees.

    Charleston, S.C.-based Benefitfocus offers a feature-rich system with an engaging employee self-service experience that supports personalized communication. HR InTouch gives Tops’ HR people a way to communicate plan information effectively across its market area, while giving associates immediate access to all of their benefits information.

    “After receiving positive feedback from other Benefitfocus retail customers, it is clear that Benefitfocus is the market leader in benefits management and communication technology,” said Jack Barrett, director of human resources for Williamsville, N.Y.-based Tops, which operates 134– 129 company-owned and five franchise locations -- and employs more than 14,000 associates in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania. “HR InTouch provides the tools we need as we continue to grow our business in the years to come.”

    As Tops expands and its benefit offerings evolve, the company’s HR team can use HR InTouch to inform associates of plan changes during open enrollment and year-round. Tasks can also be added to associates' to-do lists and information can be distributed using a secure messaging tool that allows personalized messages to be sent to different types of associates in various locations. Featuring a Software as a Service design, HR InTouch enables Tops employees to log in and view these messages from any location with Internet access. Once in the portal, which is uniquely branded for Tops, associates will also view a welcome video from the CEO.

    Another feature that led Tops to implement the Benefitfocus platform is the capability to integrate its current payroll system with HR InTouch. When employees select their benefits, the deductions are calculated and automatically synced with the payroll system. This removes paper from the process and creates administrative efficiencies for both Tops’ HR and accounting departments.
