Trader Joe's Nixes Single-Ingredient Foods from China

MONROVIA, Calif. -- Amid concerns that standards on organic products from China aren't as stringent as they should be, Trader Joe's here said it will phase out foods imported from the country at the first of the year.

"We feel confident that all of our products from China meet the same high quality standards that we set for all of our products," Alison Mochizuki, Trader Joe's spokeswoman, was quoted as saying in press reports. "However, our customers have voiced their concerns about products from this region and we have listened."

The change apparently does not affect products with multiple ingredients, some of which may be from China, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Trader Joe's will begin phasing out all foods made in mainland China from stores and around the country with a target date for elimination by Jan. 1.
