UFCW, Local 135 Hosting 'Virtual Tea Party' to Protest Tesco's U.S. Entry

SAN DIEGO - The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and members of Local 135 are planning a virtual tea party at the San Diego Convention Center this morning, to protest what they termed Tesco's "British Invasion."

Organizers said the tea party will coincide with the International Council of Shopping Centers Western Division Conference, an industry trade show for developers and retailers.

The purpose of the event is to educate lawmakers, opinion leaders, and residents about the potential impacts of the UK 's largest retailer on their communities, the unions said.

Tesco is currently planning to open 300 small-format grocery stores in California, Arizona, and Nevada. The UFCW said Tesco has stated it is prepared to spend as much as $2 billion over five years for the market launch in the U.S.
