Ukrop's to Get New In-store Video Screens

RICHMOND, Va. -- Ukrop's Super Markets, Inc. here said yesterday it will added new widescreen digital TVs inside its stores to treat shoppers to content such as news and recipes while they shop.

The screens and content will come from Fairfield, Conn.-based SignStorey Inc., which distributes video programming and advertising content to retail stores.

SignStorey's screens provide shoppers with local and national entertainment, news, sports, weather, recipes and meal ideas, cooking tips from famous chefs, and news stories from CBS and Meredith Publishing.

"We are working with Ukrop's to determine the rollout schedule and screen placement; we will likely have a schedule by next week," SignStorey v.p. marketing Jeff Weidower told Progressive Grocer.

"As we work to create a great shopping experience by sharing our passion for food and fun in a dynamic atmosphere, SignStorey helps to bring a vibrant aspect of relevant content directly to our customers," said Ukrop's v.p. of marketing and analysis Scott Aronson in a statement.

Earlier this month, SignStorey agreed to be purchased by the CBS Corp. SignStorey will be renamed "CBS Outernet" upon closing of the deal, which is expected in the fourth quarter of 2007, pending regulatory review. At closing, all of SignStorey's partners will gain access to a wide range of timely, customizable local and national.

Employing over 5,600 associates, Ukrop's operates 29 retail food stores, Joe's Market (a regional specialty market), a central bakery and kitchen, and a distribution center. It also co-owns, with Markel Corp., 25 First Market Bank branches in Ukrop's locations and 10 free-standing branches.
