UNFI Appoints Spinner President and C.E.O.; Funk Becomes Chair

The board of directors of United Natural Foods, Inc. has named distribution industry veteran Steven L. Spinner its new president and c.e.o.

Outgoing president and c.e.o. Michael S. Funk, a 32-year veteran of the company, will become chair of the board and remain actively involved in strategic growth initiatives and key customer and supplier relations, according to the natural foods distributor.

Before joining UNFI, Spinner spent over 20 years at Performance Food Group Co. (PFG), the third-largest broadline foodservice distributor in the United States, with net sales of more than $6.3 billion in its 2007 fiscal year. In May 2008 a private equity consortium acquired PFG, and Spinner subsequently left the company.

UNFI has also appointed its current chair, Thomas B.Simone, vice chair of the board. Simone will continue to serve as the company's lead independent director.

Dayville, Conn.-based UNFI carries and distributes over 60,000 products to more than 17,000 customers nationwide. The company serves a wide variety of retail formats, among them conventional supermarket chains, natural product superstores, independent retail operators and the foodservice channel.
