Wakkie to Retire From Ahold

Peter Wakkie, Ahold’s chief corporate governance counsel and member of the retail conglomerate’s Corporate Executive Board, will retire from the company, effective Dec. 31 2009.

Wakkie, 60, joined Amsterdam-based Ahold in October 2003 after 31 years at the Dutch law firm De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek.

Wakkie’s initial brief was to resolve the multiple investigations and lawsuits confronting the company following an accounting scandal that broke in February 2003, and to implement a first-class corporate governance structure. Afterward, he played a major role in Ahold’s divestment program and was chief architect of the company’s corporate responsibility strategy.

“Peter’s contribution and support during his time at Ahold have been invaluable,” noted Ahold CEO John Rishton. “He has been a pivotal member of our executive board and has played an enormous role in shaping Ahold's strategy for sustainable profitable growth.”

A successor will be nominated later this year.
