Wal-Mart and Supplier Recall Bibs over Lead Concerns

CHICAGO -- Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Hamco, Inc., in cooperation with the office of the Illinois Attorney General, are voluntarily initiating a replacement program for certain bibs manufactured by Hamco and sold exclusively at Wal-Mart stores in Illinois from June 2004 through March 2007. The bibs may contain lead in excess of Illinois limits.

Approximately 60,000 units have been sold in Illinois, but no injuries have been reported, according to the companies.

The recalled products include Baby Connection 2-Pack Easy Wipe Bibs, 7-Pack Feeder Bibs, and 2-Pack Feeder Bibs.

The vinyl material on some of the bibs may contain lead in excess of Illinois limits for products intended to be used by children.

"We will continue to cooperate fully with the Illinois Attorney General's office to ensure that customers who purchased these items receive a replacement of full refund," said Mia Masten, Wal-Mart's director of corporate affairs for the Midwest, in a statement. "We have committed to work with the Illinois Attorney General, other government agencies, industry associations, manufacturers and other retailers to develop and support new industry standards for the elimination of vinyl in children's products."
