Wal-Mart, SunEdison to Launch Solar Energy Project in Puerto Rico

Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Beltsville, Md.-based solar energy services provider SunEdison have teamed up to launch rooftop solar systems at five Walmart Puerto Rico locations over the next five years.

Scheduled to begin by the end of 2009, the solar energy initiative will be Puerto Rico’s largest renewable energy development project ever, and will comprise 25 percent to 35 percent of the power for each location.

“Today, our new Walmart stores are 21 percent more energy-efficient than our original 2005 stores,” said Renzo Casillo, president and CEO at Walmart Puerto Rico. “With this solar energy project, we’ll continue to broaden our efforts towards our main objective and commitment of being supplied 100 percent by renewable energy.” Walmart Puerto Rico and SunEdison hope to introduce the solar energy systems to 23 stores in total.
