Wegmans Recalls Private Label Seafood Sauce

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. here said yesterday it issued a voluntary recall of Wegmans Bouillabaisse Seafood Sauce because the product contains wheat that was not declared on the label. The problem was discovered during a routine label review.

The sauce is in an eight-ounce clear pouch bearing use-by dates up to and including Dec. 24, 2007, Wegmans said, adding that it has already removed the product from shelves.

The company said in a statement that consuming the sauce could cause a serious reaction in people with wheat allergies. Anyone who has eaten the product and believes he or she is developing symptoms should see a doctor, Wegmans advised.

No illnesses have been reported to date, the chain said.

Concerned customers may return the product to Wegmans for a full refund, and shoppers with any questions have been directed to contact the grocer's consumer affairs department.

The item is sold only at Wegmans stores.

Family-owned Wegmans operates 71 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland.
