Wegmans Food Markets has applied to the town of Chili, N.Y. to build a 400,000-square-foot office building at the Rochester, N.Y.-based grocer’s Fischer Road location, where it already has an office building, built in two phases over the past few years.
The current proposal represents the third and final phase of a plan to consolidate 1,600 corporate employees at one site.
The application is slated to be heard at the June 10 Chili Planning Board meeting.
“We're seeking approval to build a new facility,” Wegmans director of media relations Jo Natale told Progressive Grocer. “Once completed, we'll [relocate] our staff from an older facility to this new one. It's important to note that we are in the very preliminary planning stages of the project and have no timeline for completion.”
About 600 employees would be moved to the new building from a corporate building in Gates, N.Y., as well as staffers from leased space in other locations, and the planned facility will also be able to accommodate future company growth.
