    Weis Launches Local Produce Campaign

Initiative celebrates 13 farmers who supply Pa. grocer

Weis Markets has rolled out its annual “Your Neighbor’s, Our Farmers” local produce program, which highlights the contributions of thirteen farmers and their families who supply the grocer’s stores with produce.

“We were local before local was cool. Although this is the peak season for buying local produce, we are year-round customers of locally sourced agricultural products, including milk, eggs, pork, beef and poultry,” said Kurt Schertle, Weis Markets EVP, sales and merchandising. “We appreciate these hardworking men and women and thanks to the enduring relationships we’ve established with our local farmers, we’ve been able to offer a wide variety of local produce and have been doing so for more than a hundred years.”

In 2013, Weis will purchase more than 25 million pounds of local produce from approximately 150 farmers in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and New York.

Each Weis store will display Your Neighbor’s, Our Farmers banners with photographs which will also be featured in the grocer's produce departments by region and product, as well as in weekly circulars.
