Winn-Dixie’s ‘What-a-Deal’ Spurs Customers to take a Shot

Free apples, OJ, hand sanitizer, wipes and tissues offered with vaccination

For the second year in a row, Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. is offering the “What-A-Deal” promotion for flu season. Through Sept. 20, customers who use their Customer Reward Cards when getting a seasonal flu shot will not only pay the discounted rate of $24.99 (a $5 discount off the standard price), but will also receive five free bonus grocery items worth $12.71.

“Our guests’ health is our primary concern,” explained John Fegan, VP of pharmacy at Jacksonville, Fla.-based Winn-Dixie, which operates 483 supermarkets, including 374 in-store pharmacies, in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi. “By offering this deal, our guests not only save money, but they also enjoy the convenience of being vaccinated by their neighborhood Winn-Dixie pharmacists with no appointment required.”

According to Fegan, the five free grocery items have been “specifically bundled to help protect [shoppers] and their families during flu season. The fresh fruit and orange juice provide a healthy start to the day, and the hand sanitizer, wipes and tissues will help control the possible spread of germs.”

The specific products available through the promotion are as follows: a 3-pound bag of new-crop Eastern Jonamac apples, a 64-ounce container of Minute Maid orange juice, an 8-ounce bottle of Top Care hand sanitizer, a 35-count package of Winn-Dixie disinfecting wipes, and a 65-count or 85-count box of Winn-Dixie facial tissues.

Shoppers can avail themselves of the What-A-Deal flu prevention program in any of the grocer’s in-store pharmacies on a walk-in basis, or they can schedule an appointment with a certified Winn-Dixie pharmacist online at www.winndixie.com/pharmacy.

Other supermarket operators have also warmed to the idea of adding a sweetener to flu shot programs: Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway has just rolled out a 10 percent discount on groceries at more than 1,100 Safeway, Vons/Pavilions, Carrs, Dominick’s, Genuardi’s and Tom Thumb/Randalls in-store pharmacies across the United States.
