Winn-Dixie Installing Scanner to Automate Age Verification

Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. is leveraging technology to help control the sales of age-restricted items such as tobacco and alcohol by installing a scanner that automatically enters age verification data from a shopper’s license.

The regional grocery chain is installing the Gryphon 2D Plus Imager, which is supplied by the SAM Group in Greeneville, S.C., a value-added reseller of Eugene, Ore.-based Datalogic Scanning.

“With the new Gryphon 2D Plus Imager, we are now able to provide a higher level of service to our customers by speeding up the checkout process,” noted Robin Miller, director of communications for Jacksonville, Fla.-based Winn-Dixie. “The Gryphon not only increases scanning speed, but it also enables our associates to easily scan large items on the bottom of the shopping cart.”

Retailers who sell regulated goods such as alcohol and tobacco must adhere to federal standards to verify customer driver’s license data, including age, date of birth, and license expiration date. The Gryphon, used in conjunction with Datalogic’s DL parsing logic, which is part of the Datalogic Aladdin’s software configuration program, eliminates manual data entry of this information, reducing the risk of errors.

Winn-Dixie operates 520 retail grocery locations, including more than 400 in-store pharmacies, in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi.
