Amazon Planning 2nd Drive-Up Grocery Store in San Fran: Report

Amazon.com is planning a second drive-up grocery store in the San Francisco Bay Area for shoppers placing orders online, according to a media reports.

Last July, plans surfaced about Amazon building a 11,600-square-foot facility in Sunnyvale, Calif. for customers who want to “click and collect” grocery orders. Speculation began about whether the project was one of a kind or a sign of more locations coming. Now the same architects are working on an identical concept in San Carlos, per the  Silicon Valley Business Journal.

As PG recently reported, a new study from consultancy Brick Meets Click claims Amazon has captured about a third of all grocery spending in markets where it competes. Amazon shoppers placed about half (48 percent) of all grocery trips in those markets at the end of last year, up from 39 percent at the end of 2013.

Amazon debuted its Amazon Fresh grocery delivery service in San Francisco in 2013. Experts say the e-tailer wants to roll out the new concept broadly to capture bigger share of the grocery market.
