Star Market Marks 100th Anniversary
Founded in 1915 in Watertown, Mass., Star Market is celebrating its milestone 100th year in business in the Boston area with festivities running until the end of December. These include special offers, promotions and family-oriented activities.
"For 100 years, Star Market has been part of the fabric of Boston, a city that is very important to our long history and exciting future," noted Jim Rice, president of West Bridgewater, Mass.-based Shaw's & Star Market. "Our employees are the key to the success of Star Market and have made it the iconic brand it is today."
So far, Star Market has already erected a "Thank You Boston" billboard on Morrissey Boulevard; seen the Prudential Tower lights turned the grocer's colors of blue and green in tribute; treated 100 employees to a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park; and held an open house at which cake and activities were offered.
The upcoming family events include a July 18 tasting at the Prudential Center’s South Garden during the Magic 106.7 Family Film Festival, which features free outdoor movies, with local celebrity chef and restaurateur Jason Santos; and the racing of the Star Market 100th Anniversary and Kraft branded car at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway on July 19.
Among the banner’s scheduled promotions: Throughout 2015, the Star Market 100-year commemorative logo, signed by employees, will be displayed in front of all stores; on aprons, hats and pins worn by associates; on balloons, store signage and register receipts; and on reusable plastic and paper bags. Additionally, for the rest of the year, the Star Market weekly circular will feature one "Old Fashioned Special" on a range of items across the store.
Star Market may have reached a ripe old age, but the centenarian banner is still a youngster compared with sister chain Shaw's, whose roots stretch all the way back to 1860.
Shaw's and Star Market consist of 154 store locations in five New England states, employing about 19,000 associates.
