Month-Long Supervalu Promo Boosts Pork Sales

Supevalu stores across the country went whole hog for National Pork Month this year, using effective promotions to encourage consumers to create new mealtime favorites, from Grilled Thai Tenderloin Cutlets to Black Pepper Chops.

“Most pork promotions are a week or two long, so getting four weeks like we did at Supervalu, which is one of the top 10 grocery retailers in the United States, is a great deal,” says Rob Kirchofer, retail marketing manager, central division, for the Pork Checkoff. “This got a lot of national exposure for pork, which helps drive sales.”

The Pork Checkoff focused on boosting the frequency of pork purchases at Supervalu retail banners, which include Albertson’s, Cub Foods, Acme and other supermarkets. The Pork Checkoff worked with Supervalu to create customized point-of-sale kits and meat case signs, in-store radio spots in all Supervalu stores, and pork recipe brochures that included a coupon for $1 off of fresh pork purchases. Each brochure included many mouthwatering recipes, including Caribbean Pork Sandwiches and Beer Grilled Chops.

“We used in-store radio spots to get shoppers thinking about pork while they are in store and provide them with incentive to visit the meat case and make a purchase,” says Kirchofer, who noted that Supervalu also included in-store displays and featured fresh pork in its advertisements throughout October.

This Pork Month promotion built on the success of a similar Checkoff-supported promotions for October Pork Month in years past.

“We’re excited to continue to develop new promotions with these retailers, because they are great partners who help us connect with consumers and drive demand for pork,” Kirchofer says.
